MC carbides in Fe-based matrices: exploring a viable pathway for reducing tungsten dependence
Abstract
This study investigates the wear behaviour of novel Fe-based composites reinforced with MC carbides, developed as part of a WC substitution strategy. Four sintered samples were tested using pin-on-disc tribometry against Al2O3 counterbody under dry conditions. Results show that WC-Co reinforcements provide the lowest worn volume and the most stable friction behaviour, due to effective tribolayer formation. In contrast, the MC-reinforced sample exhibited some tribochemical activity and a good bond between the reinforcements and the matrix, but suffered from a brittle microstructure and a higher wear rate. Ongoing optimisation of raw materials and processing aims to improve the performance of MC-based systems while maintaining their beneficial reinforcement effects.
