The original stone materials, an essential element for the proper maintenance of monumental cultural heritage – Part I
Monumental cultural heritage and original stone materials
Abstract
Italy boasts the largest UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage in the world, largely consisting of monumental assets. This heritage is essentially “stone-based”, as it is composed of the lithic materials used in the construction and decoration of these works. Its preservation requires advanced maintenance interventions, both routine and extraordinary. Extraordinary maintenance often involves replacing damaged stone elements. Although Italy is home to one of the world’s finest traditions in restoration, there is a lack of technical and regulatory references to guide replacement maintenance interventions. Safeguarding cultural heritage also means ensuring that replacement maintenance uses original materials. This awareness is beginning to be reflected in regional regulations, but the absence of official guidelines from the Ministry of Culture remains a critical gap.
