A diamond wire does not simply begin on the production line. It begins much earlier: by observing a machine at work, understanding the material to be cut, talking to those who work in the quarry every day and identifying where a solution can be improved. For more than 45 years, this approach has guided Diamond Pauber in the development of its diamond wires: starting from real operating conditions and transforming needs, challenges and production goals into practical technical solutions.

Because there is no single requirement in a quarry. In some situations, cutting speed and wire life are the main priorities. In others, safety plays a decisive role. Elsewhere, limited space, unusual cutting geometries or an unexpected event during cutting may call for a completely different solution. Some of the technologies developed by Diamond Pauber were created precisely in response to these different needs.

BCO-B DOUBLE CONE: BALANCING CUTTING SPEED AND WIRE LIFE

In primary cutting, working faster does not necessarily mean working better. The real challenge lies in finding the right balance between cutting speed and the wire’s ability to maintain its performance over time. Diamond Pauber developed BCO-B diamond wire in response to this need: a new cutting solution designed for the primary cutting of marble and limestone. At the heart of the solution is the distinctive Double Cone geometry of its electroplated beads. Their conical shape generates high cutting pressure and allows the diamond to act effectively on the stone from the very beginning of the cutting process, combining high cutting speeds with longer wire life.

Performance, however, is not the only factor to consider when a wire is operating in a quarry. What happens around the wire also matters: safety, stability and behaviour during operation are equally important. For this reason, BCO-B is available in two different assembly configurations: TA, with a traditional assembly, and GA, with an SHX elastomer coating. In the event of accidental wire breakage, the SHX coating helps retain the beads on the steel rope, reducing the risk of them being ejected.

Because improving a product means considering not only its cutting capability, but also the conditions in which it is used every day. This distinctive geometry is complemented by the patented Oriented Crystals® technology. By controlling the orientation of the diamond crystals, the technology increases the effective contact between the diamond’s cutting edges and the material, further enhancing abrasive performance.

SAFEGUARD TECHNOLOGY: SAFETY STARTS WITH DESIGN

This principle led to the development of SafeGuard Technology, designed by Diamond Pauber to allow diamond wire to operate at much lower peripheral speeds than conventional wires while still maintaining effective cutting action. Reducing speed means reducing the kinetic energy involved and, consequently, helping to lower the risk to operators. It also reduces stress on the machine, limiting wear and mechanical strain during cutting. In applications where conditions allow, SafeGuard Technology also makes dry cutting possible, eliminating the need for water during the operation.

It is therefore not simply a matter of running a wire more slowly. It means starting from a different operating condition and designing the technology to respond effectively to it.

Z-81 DIAMOND WIRE: A SOLUTION BORN FROM A PROBLEM

In underground quarries, the rules change. Limited space, cutting geometry and operating conditions can make conventional quarry solutions unsuitable. Diamond Pauber developed Z-81 to meet these requirements. This diamond wire has a smaller diameter than traditional quarry wires. Its reduced cross-section makes it easier to use in the restricted spaces and specific configurations associated with underground quarry cutting. A solution developed to address one problem can also prove useful in solving another in the field.

During block squaring, for example, the wire normally used may break when the cut is already well advanced. At that point, the problem is very practical: how can the operation be completed without starting again from the beginning? Thanks to its reduced diameter, Z-81 can be inserted into the existing cut and used as a backup wire to complete the operation. A seemingly simple feature therefore becomes a tool for operational flexibility, useful both in applications involving specific geometric constraints and in recovery operations.

NOT ONE SOLUTION FOR EVERYTHING, BUT THE RIGHT SOLUTION FOR EVERY NEED

No two marbles or limestones are exactly alike. The same is true of quarries, machines, cutting geometries and the conditions in which operators work. Assuming that a single solution could respond equally well to all these variables would mean ignoring what actually happens in the field. For Diamond Pauber, in-house production and a fully Made-in-Italy supply chain also provide the flexibility to refine and develop each product, adapting its characteristics and configuration to the actual application.

BCO-B, SafeGuard Technology and Z-81 are three very different solutions. They are all based, however, on the same method: observing, listening, understanding and transforming a specific need into a technical response. This approach has been shaped by more than 45 years of experience in the stone industry and close contact with the people who extract and process stone every day. Because designing a wire for the quarry means, first and foremost, starting from the quarry to design the wire.
